Michael Allsen
Madison Symphony Orchestra and Other Program Notes, 1984-2023

This is a list of commissioned program notes on over 2000 distinct works by over 750 composers. Notes are cued to the MSO season for which I wrote them.  Where appropriate, works are linked to notes published on these pages. Additional (non-MSO) repertoire listed here is designated as follows:

Occasionally, program changes mean that notes on a given piece have been written, but not published.  These are signaled by "np." Unfortunately, this happened a lot during 2020 and early 2021, when many orchestras and festivals were obliged to cancel or dramatically revise their seasons.  The abbreviation "st" refers to projected supertitles.

NOTE TO USERS:  I have published notes online as a courtesy to the patrons of the Madison Symphony Orchestra, my students, and other interested readers.  I write program notes as part of my income and would ask that you not publish or otherwise use these notes in print or online without permission. See Terms and Pricing if you would like to commission a set of notes, or write to me at mike@allsenmusic.com to discuss terms of use.
